The freeware edition of GFI BackUp offers you a comprehensive solution to your entire data backup and synchronization needs. The program can be set to perform full, incremental, and differential backups, and the data can be either left untouched or compressed and encrypted, for extra security and extra space saving.
Trying to make things easier for everyone, GFI BackUp guides you through the whole process using its Wizard-like interface. In the main menu you can choose to launch the Backup Wizard to create a new backup, to restore or synchronize existing backups, or to open the task manager to schedule future tasks. When creating a new backup file, GFI BackUp will recognize a wide range of destination drives, including FTP servers, re-writable CDs and DVDs, and LAN locations, together with any of the well-known external storage devices.
The program offers you a high level of flexibility, both when backing up your files for the first time and when synchronizing existing backup files with new, modified, and deleted files and folders. Synchronization can be incremental (when no deletion of files takes place) or differential (when deleted source files are also deleted from the backup archive). Either way, you can ask GFI BackUp to encrypt and/or compress your data when backing them up. For encryption, the program uses 256-bit AES-based algorithms, while ZIP is the compression standard chosen to serve your compression needs. This allows you to restore your data using any ZIP-compliant compression tool.
The program comes with its own task scheduler to set up how and when it will perform any subsequent backing up tasks.
